Meet Sarah

Hi Alameda! I’m Sarah Putnam, and I’m running for Alameda School Board Trustee.I’m a parent, community organizer, former Early Childhood Educator, special needs nanny, and disability rights advocate. One of my children graduated from AUSD with an IEP, and another currently attends with a 504 Plan.At age 15, as a disabled student and athlete, I became the lead plaintiff in the landmark architectural barriers case Putnam v. Oakland Unified School District, beginning a lifetime of advocacy for accessibility, civil rights, and public accountability. As an AUSD parent, I’ve raised concerns about accessibility and often struggled to feel heard. In conversations with other parents, teachers, administrators, and community members, I’ve learned that there are other concerns and perspectives that deserve greater attention. That’s one reason I decided to run: to ask questions, bring issues that may be overlooked to the forefront, and speak out when members of our community are targeted by hate or discrimination. If you had the Alameda School Board’s attention, what would you want them to know?Your experiences and concerns are part of why I’m running.I look forward to meeting more of you throughout this campaign.Sarah Putnam
